Gelephu sits in Sarpang District on Bhutan's southern border with Assam, India — flat, sub-tropical, and already a trade gateway, unlike the mountain-locked rest of the country. The masterplan by Bjarke Ingels Group (with Arup and Cistri) spreads over roughly 2,500 km², about three times Singapore, structured by the flow of thirty-five rivers into ribbon-like neighborhoods cascading from the northern hills. Its landmarks are infrastructure with a soul: the Sankosh Temple-Dam, a run-of-river hydro plant that doubles as a monastery BIG calls 'a 21st-century Tiger's Nest,' and a mass-timber international airport built around a central Forest Spine. The airport broke ground in July 2025; first residents are expected in the early 2030s.

Balaji's book ends at the hardest step: diplomatic recognition. Gelephu starts there. This is not a crowd crowdfunding land — it is a sitting monarch carving a sovereign Special Administrative Region out of his own kingdom, with its own laws, its own courts, and a zero-capital-gains regime, with Gross National Happiness as state philosophy. It runs the network-state thesis in reverse: instead of a startup society climbing toward statehood, an existing state is building a startup society from the top down. If it works, Gelephu is the proof that a nation can host a network state rather than resist it — exactly the transition Interneta exists to federate.
